Talents

What are your talents? What inspires your interest?

The terms "talents" and "skills" are often used synonymously. However, I do think there is a subtle difference. I think there are certain things which come more naturally or easily and others which require diligent practice and study. One might notice this most in talents such as artistic or athletic "gifts" which some seem to be born with. Perhaps they are genetically predisposed to these talents, or perhaps their familial or societal environment helps them develop them early, or some combination of the two. But, I believe the difference is mostly minute. I believe that the keys to developing any talent are desire and practice. Do you know what your talents are? I think we often consider "talent" as a concrete, demonstrable skill, but I would suggest that there are many less visible attributes which could also be considered talents. For examples:

  •     The ability to be patient and nurturing with others

  •     The ability to think strategically

  •     The ability analyze logically

  •     The ability to express creatively

  •     The ability to understand and express emotionally

  •     The ability to intuitively sense things that may not be obviously visible to others

A talent can be a natural gift, it may produce something concrete or it may be a less-visible skill we can develop, or it could also be as vague as a character attribute which we can develop towards our own self-mastery. Do you know your own talents?

Journal Exercise #2

On a piece of paper, make two lists. One of talents you feel you possess. On the second, list talents which you admire or desire to possess.
